Jill Scott was born on April 4 1972 at Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Being a single girl Scott was also raised by her maternal grandmother. Scott studied at The Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating her school, she went to Temple University. Scott studied secondary school education while also working at two different job. She planned to become a high school English teacher. The dream, however was short-lived when she quit college after three year of studying and becoming an aide to teachers. When she began her professional career, performing at live poetry performances and eventually, she teamed up with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. They wrote You Got Me together. The singer performed at the Roots concert. After that, she got collaborations for instance, with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She also gained experience in performing during the Canada Tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was signed by the label's first artist.
